Obituary for Joe Reid

Joe Nelson Reid was born on August 18,1939, in Leake County, in Lena, Mississippi, to O.C. Reid and Maggie Lee Ealy-Reid. At an early age, Joe was employed at Whitfield Hospital in Pearl, Mississippi, where he worked to provide for his family. To provide for his family, he would give his entire earnings to his parents.

In the early 1960’s, he relocated, to Las Vegas, Nevada, where his Uncle R.G. Reid resided. In Las Vegas, Nevada he began working in the casino industry. His hard work led him to become one of the 1st Black Bell Captains on the Las Vegas Strip.

Once established in Las Vegas, he went back to Mississippi and got the love of his life Emma Christine Ferrell. They wed in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1962. To their union they had two sons: Kenneth J. Reid, and Keith O. Reid, both of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Joe loved to shoot pool, and play dominoes and cards. He spent his leisure time playing in pool tournaments competing against his close friends and family members. He enjoyed driving his favorite car, a Cadillac Eldorado and during the summers, he loved traveling back to his hometown with his family. Also, he enjoyed going on family trips to Disneyland and SeaWorld, with his wife and kids. Eventually, he retired from the casino industry after 30 plus years of
employment.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents: O.C. Reid and Maggie Reid, his brothers: Ollie Lewis Reid, and Ortha (Archie) Reid, and his sisters Lessie M. Johnson and Dorothy Maxine Oshodi.

Joe leaves to cherish his memories his sons: Kenneth J. Reid of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Keith O.
Reid of Las Vegas, Nevada. He also leaves to cherish his memory his sisters: Bessie Reid Lewis Davison of Las Vegas, Nevada: Jessie Dunning Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Daisy B. Dabney (Alpha) of Las Vegas, Nevada: John Henry Reid of Las Vegas, Nevada: Bertha Wallace (Floyd) of Stone Mountain, Georgia: Minnie L. Drayer of Las Vegas, Nevada: Mattie L. Sullivan of Las Vegas, Nevada, Threatha Fox Conyers of Georgia: Lucy Hill of Las Vegas, Nevada and Elaine Reid of Duncanville, Texas. Others who will sincerely miss him, include a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Joe Reid, you will be missed for the love you had for family and friends. Even though you have departed you will always be in our thoughts and in our hearts.
