Obituary for Khalin Hershel Houston

Khalin Hershel Houston was born on February 2, 1995 to  Sherell Latisha Bell and Hershel Lanard
Houston II in Los Angeles, California.  He was affectionately known as "KK" to his family. At the age of 10,
he named himself "Fresh."

As a toddler, he was full of energy. Khalin was known to carry around his favorite blanket while he
sucked his thumb. If he didn't have his favorite blanket, he'd take the lint out of his Granny's dryer and
stick it in his pocket.

Khalin didn't always like the typical children's films. He loved the movie, A Low Down Dirty Shame, but
he referred to the movie as "Shame." He would take the VHS tape with him between his grandmothers'
houses. He wore this movie out to the point that everyone was tired of it and hoped it would get left
behind at either grandparent's house.

He loved his Grandpa Hershel and he would take Khalin anywhere he wanted to go; even if they had to
ride the bus. Their love for one another was undeniable. Their favorite thing to do was to ride the bus to
the movies.

Khalin's cooking skills started at a young age from his Papi Greg. He started making grilled sandwiches at
five years old. He enjoyed his time in the kitchen, where he learned to cook and clean. He'd later use his
cooking skills to make meals for his family.

When Khalin was a kid, he spent a few summers in Atlanta with his aunt. He could make friends
wherever he went. On his first trip to Atlanta, he quickly made new friends. He spent the summer
hanging out with them and having fun with this new group of friends. Before leaving for his flight back to
California, they all knocked on the door to surprise him with letters, hugs, and safe travel wishes.

Khalin was in the Gifted Magnet Program at Westminister Elementary. In 2007 he relocated to Las
Vegas, Nevada, where he attended Johnston Middle School and Legacy High. He would later get his
GED.

He learned barbering while in middle school, and his first client was his little brother Khali. He even used
Khali to jump straight into mohawks and designs before learning the basics of cutting. Luckily for Khali,
Khalin was naturally gifted with the clippers. He would keep up with barbering until his late teens.

Khalin had an out-of-this-world relationship with his one and only sister, Sarai. When she was a baby,
she'd follow him around the house and cry when he left. No matter what he had going on with him, he
always managed to shower her with gifts. He knew his sister had a talent for drawing, so he purchased
her a set of art supplies to foster her love of drawing.

Life didn't always give him the best hand, but he used these setbacks as an opportunity for change. He
learned from his mistakes and remained out of trouble. Around this time, he would meet his future wife
and become a family man.

On October 28, 2018, he married the love of his life Destiny Tyars. He became a bonus father to Levi
Tyars Holmes and Laila Tyars Muhammad. Khalin loved being a family man because it gave him a new

sense of purpose. He was a loving father to the children. He enjoyed spending time with them. He would
take them swimming, to the park, and movies. Everything he did was for his family.

As the saying goes, "It takes a village to raise a child." In this case, Khalin village consisted of strong
elders. He had special relationships with his grandparents: Granny Linda, Grandma Jeannie, Grandpa
Hershel, and Paw Paw Tyrone.

Khalin had unconditional love for his mother. They shared a sense of humor that brought them closer,
with inside jokes that only they understood. In the face of challenges, Khalin and his mother stood
together, hand in hand, ready to conquer whatever came their way. Through the highs and lows, they
stayed by each other's side.

His Dad (Tutu) introduced him to music, and at the age of two, he wanted to become a rapper.  As the
years passed, Khalin's love for his dad grew, and their love and shared passion for music served as a
constant connection between the two of them.

Khalin held a deep affection for his stepdad Jolly. Their bond was built on mutual respect and trust, and
his presence gave Khalin a sense of freedom and independence, allowing him to navigate his own path
in the world. Jolly was always there for Khalin, offering advice as he needed it.

Khalin loved his younger brother Khali. Their bond was truly special and filled with countless moments of
laughter. One of Khalin's greatest joys was spending time with him, playing the PS5. Khalin cherished
their conversations about life, girls, and all the ups and downs that came along the way. Their bond
extended beyond being brothers; they were best friends who could confide in one another and share in
each other's experiences.
